Katarina Witt started skating at age five. She was able to prove her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted children. At this school, she was introduced to their trainer Jutta Muler. Her breakthrough year was in 1982 when she came 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Since that time, her grace and elegance attracted the attention of everyone. She began to dominate this sport. Olympic Success at Sarajevo, at the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's following a heatedly-contested competition. Four years later, her win, she managed to claim an additional competitive race. Free skates were a loss, but her gold medal resulted from the performance she put in both the compulsory figures (short programme) and the compulsory figures. Witt was the first female to be crowned champion in male and female figure skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame After enjoying the success of an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she did not win an award for gold, the young skater won over the audience. Witt's induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame took place in 1995.
